Sustainability Pavilion | Expo 2020 Dubai

The first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia took place in Dubai. From October 2020 to April 2021, the event celebrated culture and collaboration through innovative projects and exhibitions for six months. A total of 192 countries attended with millions of visitors from around the world.

There were three main sub-themes to the event: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. These were presented within three stunning UAE pavilions, but also available to be found in other nations’ pavilions.

The Sustainability Pavilion, called Terra, was quite an attraction on its own right. Designed by the renowned British firm Grimshaw Architects, the pavilion was a unique opportunity to deliver an aspirational message about the natural world, ecology and technology to a global audience.

“We are at a critical juncture in time, with an opportunity before us to create a healthy, lasting future for generations to come.” said Andrew Whalley, Deputy Chairman at Grimshaw. “The architecture and exhibitions of the Sustainability Pavilion will serve as an exciting reminder that ingenious innovation is already underway, and that further inspiration is all around us in the natural world.”

New Terracotta is delighted to have been commissioned to handmade 92.564 tiles for such a fantastic project.
